The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is a pre-collegiate program, successfully running at Queensborough Community College since 2006. The program, which is funded by the New York State Department of Education, seeks to strengthen students’ skills in science and math and motivate them to enroll in college and pursue careers in science, technology, and licensed professions. STEP is offered to students in grades 7-12 who are either an underrepresented minority and/or economically disadvantaged.
STEP students attend Saturday workshops at QCC that focus on enhancing their math and science skills and preparing them to take regents and/or AP exams in their home schools. Students are able to enroll in SAT and SHSAT prep classes as well as participate in enrichment workshop opportunities. STEP students receive access to a college advisor, licensed school counselor, and a skilled writing tutor year-round. STEP students can apply to work with QCC faculty mentors on research opportunities throughout the school year. STEP student researchers present their research in the BQS Regional C/STEP Conference, the NYS STEP Conference, and the QCC Symposium. STEP students also have the opportunity to participate in academic based field trips! STEP students are eligible to attend three weeks of engaging STEM-based summer workshops that are designed to strengthen skills in math, science, and engineering. All activities are provided to accepted students free of charge.
