The theory of diffraction and its applications to modern optics. Maxwell's equations in differential form with solutions for plane refraction. Propagation of electromagnetic radiation and Poynting's vector. Gain in laser mediums. Modulation of lasers. Calculus used throughout.The department advises students who anticipate transferring into a Bachelor's degree program in Photonics or Engineering to take PH-413 and MA-443 with or before this course.
