History of New York

This course introduces students to the diverse peoples, places, and phenomena that have shaped life in New York from the era before European colonization to the near present. Through lectures, discussions, and analysis of secondary scholarship and primary documents, students will learn how people living in different corners of New York have created communities, managed tensions, and contributed to building a state that remains the economic and cultural hub of the U.S. Topics to be covered may include Indigenous communities, Dutch, French, and English colonial settlements, the rise and fall of Black slavery, the growth of racial and ethnic enclaves, the state’s shifting economic fortunes, and the never-ending struggle of individuals, organizations, and communities to improve New Yorkers’ health, happiness, and quality of life
