United States History I: Beginnings through Reconstruction
Catalog Description
This course investigates major themes in United States history from the pre-Columbian era through the aftermath of the Civil War. Students will engage with primary and secondary sources to explore how people from different backgrounds and cultures forged relationships, negotiated tensions, and built communities. Lessons and course materials will introduce, among other topics, Indigenous cultures, the development of colonial society, the revolutionary break with Great Britian, the growth and limits of American democracy, the rise of slavery, early industrialization, territorial expansion, and sectional tensions between North and South.
